Easy homemade sweet potato fries

I enjoy classic French fries, but these oven-baked or air-fried sweet potato fries have become a go-to. They’re easy, flavorful, and pair perfectly with homemade burgers or grilled proteins. With a few simple seasonings you can change the flavor profile to suit your taste.

Swap seasonings like smoked paprika, cinnamon, or chili powder to keep things interesting.

Ingredients

A pile of garnet yams or red fleshed sweet potatoes on a stainless steel counter.
  • Garnet yams / sweet potatoes: Orange-fleshed garnet yams are ideal — sweet and they crisp up nicely.
  • Avocado oil, extra virgin olive oil, or melted coconut oil: A coating of oil helps the fries crisp. For air fryer fries, an avocado oil spray works well.
  • Diamond Crystal kosher salt to taste.
  • Freshly ground black pepper to taste.
  • Smoked paprika for a smoky finish; ground cinnamon or other spices can be used instead.

How to make sweet potato fries

Preheat the oven to 375°F on convection bake, or 400°F for a conventional oven.

Peel the sweet potatoes and cut them into even matchsticks so they cook uniformly.

Sweet potatoes cut unto matchsticks.

Arrange the fries in a single layer on a rimmed baking sheet lined with foil or parchment (parchment yields a crispier exterior). Toss with your chosen oil, salt, pepper, and smoked paprika.

Sweet potato fries are in a single layer in a parchment lined rimmed baking sheet about to be baked in the oven.

Bake for about 30 minutes, flipping and rotating the tray halfway through for even browning. When the fries are tender through the center and browned on the edges, remove and serve immediately.

Air fryer sweet potato fries

For the air fryer, preheat to 375°F. Lightly coat the cut fries with avocado oil spray and season them. Arrange in a single layer in the basket and cook 15–20 minutes, shaking the basket every 8 minutes to promote even crisping. Cook until they’re cooked through and crisp on the outside.
