These cookies are a dairy-free, egg-free take on the festive chocolate chip cookies many of us remember from holiday baking. They have chewy centers, slightly crisp edges, and a cheerful, colorful presentation.
I adapted this version to be entirely plant-based so I could package them as gifts for friends and neighbors — and they turned out even better than I remembered.
They’re delicious straight from the oven, so plan to bake when you can enjoy warm, gooey cookies fresh from the tray.

Step by step recipe video
The video demonstrates how easily you can make soft, chewy vegan chocolate chip Christmas cookies in your kitchen. The recipe uses basic ingredients and avoids specialty replacements like flax or chia eggs.

Key ingredients
Flour – All-purpose flour gives the best results, though whole grain spelt, oat flour, or an all-purpose gluten-free blend also work well. Using almond or coconut flour would require recipe adjustments.
Chocolate chips – Choose nondairy semi-sweet or dark chocolate chips. For variety try vegan white chocolate, cinnamon, butterscotch, or peanut butter chips.
Sugar – Granulated white sugar produces the softest, chewiest cookies. Brown sugar or coconut sugar can be used if you measure by grams rather than cups.
Vegan butter – Unsalted plant-based butter is recommended. You can also use melted coconut oil; if using a solid butter substitute, melt it before mixing.
Other basics – Baking soda, salt, water, and pure vanilla extract round out the dough. No eggs are needed.
Decorating dairy free Christmas cookies
Vegan M&Ms – Several brands now offer plant-based chocolate lentils or candy-coated chocolate alternatives. If you can’t find them, just add extra chocolate chips.
Sprinkles – Red, white, and green sprinkles make these cookies festive. When choosing sprinkles, check labels for vegan-friendly ingredients (avoid confectioner’s glaze, carmine, beeswax).

How to make the recipe
You can bake these immediately or prepare the dough in advance and chill it overnight for easier baking and enhanced chewiness.
- Preheat the oven to 325° F (165° C) if baking right away.
- Whisk together flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl or stand mixer.
- Stir in sprinkles, vegan M&Ms, and chocolate chips, or reserve some to press into the tops of each cookie before baking.
- Add melted vegan butter, vanilla, and water. Mix until a cookie-dough texture forms — it may seem dry at first; stir about 1–2 minutes.
- Form dough into balls using a small scoop or clean hands.
- Arrange balls on a greased or nonstick baking sheet, leaving room to spread.
- For chewier cookies, chill the dough balls an hour or overnight. For crispier cookies, bake immediately.
- Bake on the center oven rack for about 11 minutes.
- Allow cookies to cool on the sheet until firm enough to transfer; they set further as they cool.
- Store cooled cookies in a covered container at room temperature up to five days, or freeze for up to three months.
