Active prep time is about 10–15 minutes; most of the remaining time is just waiting for the chocolate to set. To speed that up, place the tray in the refrigerator for a short while.

Use whatever red and green sprinkles you have on hand. A simple mix of red and green nonpareils or jimmies is all you need to achieve a festive look.

Tip: This recipe yields popcorn that’s generously coated in white chocolate. If you prefer just a hint of chocolate, halve the amount of chocolate used.

The method below is written with microwave melting in mind, but you can melt the white chocolate in a double boiler on the stovetop if you prefer. One bag of microwave popcorn yields roughly 12 cups, so aim for a similar volume if popping on the stove or with a popcorn maker.

Ingredients

  • 1 bag microwave popcorn (about 12 cups)
  • 1 pound white chocolate chips
  • Red and green sprinkles to taste

Instructions

  • Pop the popcorn according to package directions. Spread it on a large baking sheet lined with wax paper and discard any unpopped kernels.
  • Melt the white chocolate in a medium bowl. In the microwave, heat in 30-second increments, stirring between each interval to avoid scorching. Alternatively, melt in a double boiler on the stovetop.
  • Pour the melted white chocolate over the popcorn and toss gently until the popcorn is evenly coated. Use clean hands or tongs to mix if you prefer.
  • Spread the coated popcorn into an even layer on the baking sheet and sprinkle with red and green sprinkles while the chocolate is still wet.
  • Allow the chocolate to set. To speed this, chill the baking sheet in the refrigerator for about 15 minutes.
  • Store the popcorn in an airtight container or portion into small bags for gifting. It will remain fresh for a few days.

Notes

  • If you prefer just a light chocolate touch, use half the white chocolate (about 8 ounces) instead of a full pound.
  • One bag of microwave popcorn yields approximately 12 cups; adjust quantities accordingly if popping more or less popcorn by another method.
