This Classic Cheese Ball is an ideal appetizer—creamy, flavorful, and easy to serve with crackers or fresh vegetables. It’s a family favorite that appears at birthdays, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and every gathering in between.

Why make a cheese ball?
A Classic Cheese Ball is hard to beat for parties and casual get-togethers. It’s a nostalgic crowd-pleaser—many of us remember moms and grandparents making variations over the years. The recipe is adaptable, so you can swap cheeses or coatings to match your taste.
There are many ways to vary a cheese ball: try different cheeses like port wine or smoked varieties, or roll the finished ball in herbs, bacon, or seeds. For a variation, see my cheese ball with dried beef recipe.
How to make a Classic Cheese Ball
The Classic Cheese Ball is simple to prepare: combine the ingredients, shape the mixture into a ball, and chill. You can mix by hand for a rustic feel or use a mixer with a paddle attachment for speed.
What is a Cheese Ball made with?
- Cream cheese: Softened so it mixes easily and holds shape.
- Cheddar cheese: Shredded for texture and flavor.
- Green onions: Finely diced for brightness.
- Ranch seasoning mix: Dry mix (onion powder, dill, parsley, garlic powder, salt, pepper, chives). Use store-bought or homemade.
- Pecans: Chopped and used to coat the outside of the cheese ball for crunch.

Directions
Step one: In a large bowl, combine the cream cheese, shredded cheddar, diced green onions, and dry ranch seasoning. I mixed everything by hand, but a mixer with a paddle attachment works well, too.

Step two: Once the ingredients are evenly blended, form the mixture into a ball with your hands.
Step three: Spread the chopped pecans on a plate and roll the cheese ball in the nuts until it’s fully coated.
Step four: Cover the cheese ball and chill in the refrigerator for at least an hour to firm up and allow flavors to meld.

What to serve with a cheese ball
I like to serve the cheese ball with crackers—Ritz or Triscuit work well—or with raw vegetables like celery, bell pepper strips, and carrot sticks. It’s versatile, so offer a variety of dippers to suit different tastes.
Storage and shelf life
Stored covered in the refrigerator, this cheese ball will keep for about 7–10 days. Keep it sealed to maintain freshness and prevent odors from other foods.
Can you freeze a cheese ball?
Yes—freezing is possible and useful for prepping ahead. A frozen cheese ball will keep about a month if wrapped properly.
Freezing method:
Form the cheese ball following the directions, but do not roll it in nuts or any coating. Wrap it tightly in plastic wrap and place it in a freezer-safe zip-top bag. To thaw, move the cheese ball to the refrigerator for 6–8 hours before serving, then roll it in nuts or herbs after thawing.
