The Joys of Slow Cooking

Slow cookers are a lifesaver for busy households. I recently remade this Caribbean-style stew while filming a campervan cooking video and decided to bring the recipe back from the archives—its ease and flavour are worth sharing again.

On hectic days, especially when juggling work and farming tasks, having a one-pot meal that practically cooks itself makes a huge difference. With minimal prep, the slow cooker breaks down tougher cuts of meat and lets flavours meld over several hours, rewarding you with a rich, tender stew.

Using a slow cooker also stretches your grocery budget: bulk the stew with vegetables and beans and you’ll need less meat. Choosing cheaper, tougher cuts that become meltingly tender during long cooking gives you great texture and flavour while allowing you to spend a bit more on higher welfare or better-quality meat where it matters.

Quick, Easy and Delicious Pepperpot Stew

This recipe takes about 15 minutes to assemble. After a long slow-cook, you’ll have a hearty, comforting meal that tastes even better for the simplicity of its preparation. It’s an ideal midweek or weekend recipe when you want something nourishing but low-effort.

One-pot, rustic meals like this embrace simple techniques and real ingredients. They’re designed to feed the family, save time in the kitchen and make the most of seasonal vegetables.

Choose affordable cuts of meat to support better farming practices

As consumers, our choices influence farming. Opting for better-quality meat when possible and reducing demand for the cheapest options helps encourage higher welfare standards. When a stew uses vegetables and beans to bulk out the dish, you can spend more on the meat you include without increasing overall cost.

Next time you buy beef or lamb, consider the welfare credentials available to you. Choosing meat produced under clear welfare and environmental standards helps support responsible farmers and better practices.
